HISTORY

TRIGGER WARNINGS: PARENTAL DEATH, CHILD ABANDONMENT, MURDER, TORTURE, KIDNAPPING, PERIOD-TYPICAL HOMOPHOBIA .Born July 10th, 1877, four years after his older sister - Clarissa - Llewellyn was too young when his parents died to remember much of them. He was raised by Clarissa, who took on work at a laundry to provide for them. One day, when Llewellyn was twelve years old, Clarissa went to work and never returned. He was taken in by their landlady, who had a set of twin boys named Hubert and Daniel. Llewellyn quickly took on the role as the twins' protector and older brother, becoming nicknamed "Llewy."Llewellyn joined the Toronto Constabulary in 1898 with the hopes to rise to the rank of detective and locate Clarissa, convinced she had been taken. He become a constable at station house, during which time a man who had tormented Hubert and Daniel as children - Nigel Baker - brutally tortured and killed Daniel after he'd reported on a robbery Nigel had committed. During the investigation into Daniel's murder, Nigel's men started a fight outside the stationhouse that Llewellyn went to break up. Upon returning, the murder weapon had been wiped clean of Daniel's fingerprints. In a desperate attempt to make sure Nigel would hang for his brother's murder, Llewellyn sent Hubert to reapply the fingerprint from Daniel's body in the morgue. However, having Down Syndrome that affected his ability to tell left from right, Hubert applied the fingerprint from the wrong hand. Nigel managed to have the court re-examine the evidence, and upon finding this inconsciencty, Nigel Baker was set free.After six years as a constable, Llewellyn made detective status at station one in 1904. Among his early cases was to be sent to station house four and oversee an investigation that Detective William Murdoch had been barred from. After a successfull collaboration with station house four, but a not-so-successfull return to station one, Watts joined the team at station four, continuing to look into cases of missing women and try to find anything linking back to his sister.

In a 1905 investigation into the murder of Muriel Bruce, Watts is lead to the Greenwood Estate in Rosedale which now functions as a woman-only sanctuary where the women go by aliases of the Greek goddesses. This is where Llewellyn finds Clarissa, now going by the name Athena. After being pressed by Llewellyn to tell the truth about her disappearence, she snaps at him that she left of her own accord because she didn't want to take care of him anymore. Being the most viable suspect for the murder at the time, Clarissa is a arrested, at which point she insults Llewellyn by saying she was right to leave him, and calling him oppresive and arrogant. Ultimately, Clarissa is released, but she moved the women to an unknown location, and she and Llewellyn agree to go their seperate ways.In 1906, Nigel Baker is found murdered, and Watts is found at the scene, placing him at the number one suspect. Hours in and out of the interrogation room and stories that don't quite add up eventually lead to the revelation that Hubert and Danny are his brothers, and the truth about Danny's murder investigation. While Murdoch is investigating, he finds Hubert tortured and murdered in the same way Danny had been. As it turns out, Baker's father had stumbled upon the scene prior to Detective Murdoch, and killed his own son is retaltion. So while Watts was exonerated and Nigel Baker had paid for his crimes, Watts questions where the justice in all this really is.Over the course of his career, Llewellyn finds himself blown about like the wind and falling in love all too easily. After two heartbreaks, he quits his job as a detective in 1910 and moves to New York. Eventually, he does make his way back to Toronto, first living among a Mennonite community. However, when he discovers that this community will not accept him as he is, he re-enters Toronto society as a private investigator.
